Review of Guildhall soiree by Dave Walsham

Singing is an activity, which is as public or private as the singer wants to make it. Caroline Rigby has been directing a small group of very competent singers for the last five years or so. The real plus points of the group being that the pieces were not learnt formally by rote, rather taught in the aural tradition. The repertoire is highly eclectic, and at the soiree last Wednesday evening (it was too intimate a gathering to call it a concert!) music was featured from Germany, Russia and America there were gospel songs, a Maori piece and a spiritual.  more...

Homes are affordable when you are loaded

I'M pleased to read the letter from Dr Monk (Packet 21/6/06), but I don't think his figures are that inaccurate. I fully agree with his diagnosis regarding affordable homes, he is quite right, they are not affordable, and never will be under the money orientated system we live in.  more...

Are Blair’s NHS reforms doing any good?

I am true to myself so can’t be false to others

I WAS amused by the dear old Skipper throwing his rattle out of his pram because a Cornishman had the effrontery to express his opinion in his own country (John Baragwaneth, Packet June 21). What might we do next? Demand skilled work, affordable housing, the flying of our flag, the cessation of the destruction of our beautiful country?  more...

One cannot be English and Cornish as well

Proud of all the flags I fly on different occasions

ON certain days I fly the following flags The Cornish, county of my birth and my father's; the Scottish, country of my wife's birth; the Welsh, country of my mother's birth, the White Ensign as an ex-Royal Navy Lifer and my adopted country, Canada. I'm proud of them all!  more...

Let’s be kind to our blind English cousins!

Hospital abuse case has shamed this county

IF Cornwall the Cornish ever thought they were something special or superior to the rest of England in which the county of Cornwall is geographically situated, then the "Hospital Abuse Shock" case is proof, shocking proof, that Cornwall has patently failed in its duty toward the elderly, sick, and disabled. A disgrace, a blot on England's reputation.  more...
