We should carry blood group card

I WONDER how many people are aware of what their blood group is. Nowadays it seems to be very difficult to find out what it is. Radiation thought to be dangerous

We're whitewashed by powers that be

I wish to express my outrage after watching this week's Tonight programme with Trevor McDonald. I cannot believe that professionals in their field are still denying the harmful effects of electro magnetic radiation (emitted from mobile phones, electrical pylons or any equipment that transmits radio waves, even the household microwave)! I firmly believe electro magnetic radiation is seriously harmful to people's health and there are numerous scientific studies that support this view.   more...

Show the engines on farmland

WHY not move Trevithick Day to a few weeks later than present, to mid-May, when the first cut of silage crop on farmland close to Camborne has been taken, and use that site to parade the lively and colourful steam engine, in a fenced and marked ring to display them openly? All the machines must be insured, surely, otherwise they would not be on the roads. People in this area are not going to succumb to this modern, dictatorial practice from woolly-minded bureaucrats, oblivious to the public delight in steam power, the same steam power that local genius Richard Trevithick gave his life's work for.  more...

It's right that we put safety first

I AM writing in support of the banning of the Trevithick Day parade. Nobody has enjoyed them every year more than my family and me. I worked on the footplate for 15 years so you can imagine my interest in steam.  more...

How could I have been so stupid?

I took my dog for a walk in Tehidy Woods yesterday. I was away from the car for about three hours. I left my bag in clear view in the car parked at East Lodge. But then I'd done that 100 times before - who hasn't? After all, there's been no trouble there for months. So I got complacent. When I returned to the car there was this police patrol car parked beside mine - and glass everywhere - and no handbag.  more...

Hare and Hounds triumph for Tim

VERY cold but dry conditions greeted the 176 starters in Pendennis MC's annual Hare and Hounds enduro at Helston on Sunday. With championship points up for grabs for the South West 2004 title, most of the main contenders were in attendance with the exception of reigning champion and first round winner Jason Fraser who was sidelined with a bad bout of food poisoning. TM's Tim Lewis and Gareth Andrew kept the action alive with the lead changing throughout the hour until Lewis opened up a minute lead at the first fuel stop. Lewis increased his advantage in the second hour to four minutes then Andrew came back to within a minute but faded a little towards the end and finished 2½ minutes adrift of Lewis and five minutes up on third placed and early hole shot leader Richard Penhaligon. In the Experts, Bradley Williams left the rest to fight for the minor places after repeating his first round win with the only rider to complete ten laps in class. Less than two minutes separated the next five positions with Shaun Daymen just edging Chris Dustow who passed Stuart George yards from the flag after George was brought down passing a slower rider and missing out on at least a third place. Left on the line after his bike failed to start, Clubman 220 winner Jason Richards came through the field to finish a lap up on rest of his class as did Somerset visitor Charlie Richards in the Clubmen Open over Vince Allen who just pipped veteran Arthur Johnson for the runners-up berth by 30 seconds. A delighted Martin Iles was in fourth place hoping his recent run of bad luck with machinery has finally gone away. Things were also close for the top positions in the 250 Four Stroke. John Young took the lead in the last hour and finished just over a minute up on the French Connection Yamaha of Wayne Davey. Things could have been so different in the Over 250 Four Stroke had Gary Prisk not hit a tree. Refusing to retire, he cruised around for the final two laps handing South Molton veteran Michael White a comfortable class win. In competing in his first full event and first time out on a Two Stroke Honda, Paul Eiffert was "over the moon" with his day's performance, winning the large entry class by three minutes from Adrian Knowles who also completed seven laps. Promotion for these two riders shouldn't be too many events away. In completing eight and seven laps respectively, Jamie Paget and Richard Williams certainly would not have disgraced themselves amongst the adults results and are surely two youth competitors with a bright future in the sport. With the overall win in his sights, Nick Whetter's quad broke its chain, but after a frantic repair he took up the challenge with some very quick lap times and just failed to catch Nigel Hodges' Grizzly 4x4. The side-cars also had disappointment for the front runners. After leading for the first two hours Matt Turner and Gavin Yendle missed their second re-fuelling stop and paid the price, leaving Seward/Rogers out in front with a lap in hand over Chapman/Elcocks who were six minutes up on Mallaber/Lanyon at the end of three hours of superb competition throughout all the different classes. Championship: 1, Tim Lewis (St Ives) 250 UKTM, 10 laps, 1-40; 2, Gareth Andrew (Crofthandy) 250 Yamaha, 10, 4-20; 3, Richard Penhaligon (Ponsanooth) 250 Yamaha, 10, 9-50; 4, Jack Twentyman (Blisland) 250 Honda, 10, 11-30; 5, Steve Duston (Par) 250 Yamaha F, 10, 16-25. Chairman's resignation shocks league

The West Cornwall Table tennis committee was rocked by the news that their chairman of the past 15 years, Roger Jacobs, is standing down at the end of this season. Roger, who plays for People's Palace A, is the longest serving chairman in the history of the league. The search is now on for his replacement, he will definitely be a hard act to follow, and some would say, he was a better chairman than table tennis player. Congratulations go to Ryan Reed of Bridge D, who the committee voted January's player of the month. In the Premier Division, the sleeping giant, Falmouth Docks A, roared into life with a 6-4 away victory over St Austell A. Jeremy Williams and Nick Smale won two each and the doubles, and Esme Denslow got the other point for Docks. For St Austell, Adrian Noott won all of his games, including the double over Jeremy. Penpol pulled off a shock 6-4 home win over Godolphin. Howard Nicholson had a hat-trick; he came from 10-6 down against Colin Morris in the fifth end, to win 19-17. Brother, Andrew, won two, with Juliet Els continuing her good form to win one. People's Palace C are just one point ahead of their D team at the top of the table, following their 6-4 success when Redruth B visited the Palace. Paul Mallen won all three and the doubles with Tony Hale. Tony and Brian Nicholls, playing for the unavailable John Parks, won one each. For Redruth, Gerry Barnicoat and William Carnell won two each. In the Second Division, St Austell D have had a busy time, playing three matches. First a 6-4 win at home to Mylor Bridge B. Tim Bowler won all his games, Dean Bowler two, and Ryan Bowler one. They were then held to a draw at home by Falmouth Docks D, with Howard Baker doing the double over Tim Bowler. They then visited Redruth D and were again held to a draw. Falmouth Docks D followed their draw with a 7-3 win over St Ives C. Howard Baker, Stuart Grey and Stuart Denslow are now well on course for promotion. In the Third Division, the young St Ives D team had a 7-3 result against People's Palace K. Rachel Trevorrow won all her games, Nathan Bassett, the grandson of the one and only John, won two, as did Michael Davis. People's Palace J are still the team out in front, the only team in the whole of the league with an 100% success record. This follows their 8-2 victory over Mylor D. Other Results - Premier Division: St Austell B 7, Mylor Bridge A 3; Redruth A 6, People's Palace B 4; St Ives A 7, Falmouth Docks B 3. First Division: Falmouth Docks C 2, People's Palace D 8; Harris Mill A 2, St Ives B 8; People's Palace C 6, Redruth B 4. Second Division: Cape Cornwall A 5, Harris Mil C 5. Third Division: Bridge D 4, St Ives D 6; Mylor Bridge D, Bridge D 5; Redruth E 7, Penryn College 3; Cape Cornwall B 6, Cape Cornwall C 4; People's Palace H 2, Penryn College 8; Mylor Bridge C 8, Harris Mill E 2.  more...
