Cornwall Cornwall Letters

We look forward to Festival 2004

I would like to thank everyone who has taken the time and trouble to write in praise and support of the Falmouth Festival of Literature and Arts which took place at Pendennis Castle last weekend, and also the Packet for printing the letters. We have received a tremendously positive response to the event, which leads us to believe we have no option but to repeat it next year. We would also like to thank all the volunteers who gave their time to help out when they would no doubt have preferred to be on the beach.  more...

It was a weekend to remember

My husband and I have just enjoyed a wonderful weekend. Where? At the first Falmouth Festival of Literature and Art at Pendennis Castle. The programme offered something for everyone with speakers as diverse as George Alagiah, who talked of his beloved Africa in thought-provoking and moving terms, to Julian Richards, who gave us a taste of the exciting quest for our ancestors.  more...

Impressive range of speakers

I should like to thank Kirsten Whiting and her team on the excellent Falmouth Festival of Literature and Arts.  more...

It's no good blaming press

Having seen articles in the press regarding the literary festival I decided it wasn't really my thing but good on them for organising it.  more...

Lack of Christian compassion

With reference to "Homeless shelter to close" (Falmouth Packet, August 28) it is a sorry tale given that in the 21st century we still have such unfortunate people in our otherwise affluent community/country.   more...

Please help find Joel's cuddly pal

We recently lost my son Joel's bedtime bunny whilst in or around Falmouth/Penryn's Asda store. After inquiring there with no luck I spoke to a friend at work who told me she had the same problem a couple of years ago and she wrote to the Packet and thanks to the publicity they had it returned by a member of the public.   more...

MP should have spoken earlier

It would normally be something to applaud when a member of Parliament stands up for local people. But this can't be said when I read that our local MP Candy (I never vote against the Government) Atherton "urges cut in water bills".  more...

Thanks for a successful day

The organisers of Mawnan Country Fayre which took place on Saturday, September 13, wish to thank all persons and organisations involved in the event for their support in making this a most successful day and for all donations received.  more...

It seems rubbish begets rubbish

Assistance was appreciated

I would like to thank the two ladies who kindly stopped and gave me assistance last Thursday afternoon when my dog was set upon by another dog on Swanpool HIll. You drove me to the nearest point home and my friends and I took my dog to the vet for a complete check-up. He has made a complete recovery after being in total shock. Once again, many thanks.  more...

Noise on Friday was deafening

I DON'T want to be a killjoy with regard to Falmouth Week, but I just cannot let pass one of the letters saying the noise was no louder than previous years.  more...

Willing to help re-start chamber

IN January 1997, when I was deputy mayor, I felt strongly that business people in Helston should have their own voice for their concerns. As a result I called a meeting in the Guildhall having personally invited over 170 people.  more...

Sewage solutions needed right now

I attended the meeting of the Red River Working Party at Kerrier council offices on September 11. It was supposed to discuss the problem of raw sewage in the Red River caused by failure of the storm water systems at Tolvaddon and Reskaddinick. But the first three-quarters of the meeting was taken up by South West Water, The Environment Agency, and Camborne-Redruth Urban Regeneration telling us how everything was within acceptable parameters and how wonderful it would all become by 2015.  more...

Council has appalling record

As the person who first brought estate road and bond/cash deposit irregularities to attention, which were later confirmed by Internal Audit, and who, when the crucial issues of responsibility and culpability were not being addressed, insisted on an approach to the District Auditor, perhaps I may be allowed to comment on the statement from County Hall that the District Auditor would investigate "the Highways Department's development control processes".  more...

Football teams need support

A grand auction of over 100 items (all new) will be held at the Sportsman's Arms, Four Lanes, at 8pm on Friday. The event is being staged to raise urgently needed funds for the village football teams.  more...

No reason to fly European flag

Passing by the Camborne council offices and magistrates courts now in the old Basset Road school buildings, I was disgusted and deeply angered to see the detested European Union flag on display together with the Union Jack and the Cross of St Piran.  more...

I'm amazed there are objections

On passing the new magistrates' court and council offices in Bassett Road, Camborne, in August, I felt so pleased to be a Camborne person. For the first time in an age, we had a civic building to be proud of and the image presented to the public with newly-done flower beds and the three impressive flags told of a town that had, at last, left behind the parochial image it has projected for so many years.   more...

Council can pay for lights

Carrick district council should help to pay for Truro's Christmas lights. Residents in Carrick pay bigger council tax bills than those in any other district in Cornwall.   more...

Public can pay for lights

I think the general public should help to fund the lights, we are the ones who appreciate them, and the City. It should be lit at Christmas.  more...

Traders can pay for lights

I think the lights should be paid for by the people who benefit most from them: i.e, the traders. These multi-national companies come to our city and dictate to our councillors so maybe there should be a clause in their contracts when they take over that they should contribute a certain amount to the upkeep and running of the City.  more...

Devolvement porkers?

I HAVE recently been informed that a number of prospective developers, who wish to develop and/or convert properties in rural locations in Cornwall, have been advised that to stand any chance of getting approval the applications should be for Holiday Lets.  more...

Others had hand in it!

I am writing to you to inform you about an article about The Bolingey September Fayre (Truro Packet, week ending 13.9.03). As the article reads, most of the credit should go to Steve Smith from The Bolingey Inn. This as it happens is not so.   more...

Fun runners fund fund

Everyone supporting the Merlin Project, fundraising for a Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre in Cornwall, is most grateful to the three great runners who were sponsored for the Truro Fun Run. John Waldie of Gulval, Simon Barrett of Portreath and Jason Roberts of Falmouth, all did well in a crowded field, particularly Jason, who insisted on completing the course in spite of a broken rib.  more...

Wellington police to face public and council bosses

THE OFFICER in charge of Wellington's police will face town councillors and members of the public on Monday night. Sector Commnader, Insp Mike Ashwin has hit back at negative reports on policing in the town following outbreaks of late night violence and vandalism in South Street earlier this month. "Incidents such as these are sporadic and very difficult to predict," he said in a letter to Wellington Town Council. And Insp Ashwin added that far from treating crime and disorder as 'high spirits', his officers were taking the problems seriously. "In general terms, the change in policing style at Wellington has seen some very positive results, which I will further advise you of when I attend your meeting," he said. Insp Ashwin and Sgt Richard Caburn of Wellington police will be at Wellington Town Council's meeting this Monday from 7pm.   more...
