YEOVIL Junction Railway Station has steamed in to scoop a top prize in South West Trains' Station Pride Awards for 2003.
The judges thought the station was well kept and that employees made great efforts to improve its look. Staff were also said to have created an impressive range of floral displays that had attracted many compliments from passengers.
Teamwork was paramount to the success of Yeovil Junction and even Network Rail employees and the manager of the station's buffet could regularly be relied on to lend a hand.
Yeovil MP David Laws was at the station last Friday to meet staff after it scooped the Best Medium Station category in South West Trains' awards
Transport minister, Dr Kim Howells, recently spent a day touring South West Trains' operations and has congratulated the winners.
"Rail passengers deserve to travel in a clean and secure environment," he said. "It is good to see the effort of South West Trains are making to ensure their stations are pleasant places to be for both passengers and staff.
"There are few better ways than this of attracting new customers to the railway. Congratulations to Yeovil Junction and the other winners."
To recognise the win, the station will receive £1,000 to spend on a piece of equipment or an initiative that will benefit both passengers and staff. All employees will get a £50 Marks and Spencer voucher.
The other winners were: Winnersh Triangle, best station operating in difficult circumstances; Surbitan, best large station; Sway, best small station; Ash Vale, most improved station.
