Unlawful killing verdict on builder

From the archive, first published Wednesday 12th Nov 2003.

A JURY has returned a unanimous verdict of unlawful killing at an inquest into the death of a Chard builder.

Roger Arscott, 60, of King Alfred Drive, died at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, after falling 15 feet from a roof at Air Control Industries in Silver Street on July 29 last year.

The tragedy happened at about 5pm, at the end of a working day, when staff employed by building contractor Graham Turner were removing the last pane of glass in a section of the roof.

Office workers at the factory rushed to Mr Arscott's aid after he fell through plastic sheeting onto a concrete floor in the factory's goods inward area. He later died as a result of multiple injuries.

Coroner for West-Somerset Michael Rose, who described Mr Arscott's death as "a tragic accident", recorded the verdict of unlawful killing.

He said he would be returning paperwork to the Crown Prosecution Service and that it would be up to them if they wanted to take matters further.
